An individual earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the hours before former President Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.
A single trader, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Trading information shows that participants put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.
But the market's assessment had jumped to 11% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on inside information," commented a financial reform advocate.
A small number of other traders also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.
Some lawmakers are growing concerned.
A bill introduced on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.
Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from elections to current affairs.
This sector were examined under the Biden administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.
Trading on insider information is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting industry.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
